Are you sure, you have rights to install anything on your computer. I mean to install something, you should have admin rights. In linux world, generally you get these rights by supplying a SUDO command.

I did exactly as said but am getting “permission denied” messages. What now?

I am assuming that you downloaded the ‘i686′ Linux version file. If you did, then you shouldn’t see this error message.
Try to download it again.
If 0.7 then from http://getsongbird.com
If 1.0 RC2 then from http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Developer/Articles/Builds/Nightly_Builds and select Linux, i686.

for ubuntu, it says that the archive type is not supported, what should i do??
