There has been really no way to get Yahoo! Mail to your desktop except using YPOPs! or some cheating and of course buying the Premium subscription.
How come you can get any other email address (Gmail, Live, AIM etc.) on your desktop client but not Yahoo!?
Gmail, AIM and others you can get through Outlook or Thunderbird.  Live Mail you can get through Windows Live Desktop or with the help of Outlook connector in your Outlook.
Everyone has always wondered how to get Yahoo! Mail on the desktop.  It is possible now my friend.
I have been testing this new product Zimbra Desktop (still in beta) for some time now.  Zimbra is basically another Desktop client which enables you access your Yahoo!, Ymail or Rocketmail emails on your Desktop.  Even offline Yahoo mail access is also possible.  Zimbra is a Yahoo! product.
Some features:
  • Yet another Desktop client like Outlook and Thunderbird etc.
  • Zimbra is free and open source.  And this is a Full version so there is no missing feature.
  • Enables access to Yahoo! Mails including Ymail and Rocketmail.
  • POP and IMAP functionality like other clients.  So you can use it as you default email client.  I can confirm that it works with Free Yahoo! Mail account, you don’t have to be a Plus account holder.
  • Almost same look as new Yahoo! Mail.
  • Gives you Calendar, Address book and many other features.  For complete list you can read this Zimbra Blog post.
  • Enables offline Yahoo Mail access.  Sync happens when you go online.
Some features are not yet complete as it is still in beta.  But worth giving it a try if you are a Yahoo! fan.  Couple of image below might give you some idea.  (Image Source : Zimbra Blog)

If you like or want to try Zimbra, you may download Zimbra here.

Update:
Ubuntu users can install Zimbra Collaboration Suite right from Synaptic.  Thanks to Canonical and Zimbra team for this step to make Ubuntu users life simple.  I think I will ditch Thunderbird and Evolution now for Zimbra.
