It will not be wrong to assume that almost every one uses Gmail. And most of the user are happy the way it is. But…More is always better. Isn’t it?
Now if you use Firefox, the second best browser in the world, you are in luck. Because you can extend the capabilities of Gmail by using some of the following Firefox Add-ons:
(Before adding any add-on : Click to enlarge)
- Gmail labs: I am not gonna explain all those as Gmail blog already explains about them pretty well. Actually you don’t need to as all labs features are pretty self explanatory. But one thing is sure, they add lots of cool things to Gmail like:
- Right side Chat & labels
- Canned Responses
- Navbar drag and drop
- Mail Goggles
- Forget Attachment Detector
- Google Docs & Calendar Gadget
- And more and more….will be coming soon.
- Remember the milk Firefox Addon:
Remember The Milk for Gmail is an extension that allows you to manage your tasks in Gmail (complete, postpone, and edit tasks), add new tasks (and connect them with your emails, contacts, and Google Calendar events), automatically add tasks for starred messages or specific labels, and much more! Read the complete details of this addon on RTM.
OR - Remember the milk Gmail Gadget: This RTM Gmail gadget allows you to manage your tasks in Gmail same way as the above Firefox add-on, the only exception being you will have this gadget everywhere you are using Gmail, no matter it is Firefox or Internet Explorer or any other browser. Because it is added in your Gmail. Just copy and paste the following xml file link as a Gadget. Though you will have use the labs features.
http://www.rememberthemilk.com/services/modules/gmail/rtm.xml
Read the complete details of this gadget here on RTM or on RTM blog.
- dragdropupload: Drop files into attachment boxes instead of browsing for them. You can even drop multiple files and this extension will do the rest for you. Just drop the files over the “Attach a file” link.
- Gmail Ad Blocker: Gmail Ad blocker blocks Gmail text advertisements which take up a lot of space and are not blocked by other addons. Enjoy more screen space for your messages! (This is an experimental FF add-on, so you will have to register on Mozilla to use it.)
- Google Indic Transliteration: Allows user to type in Indian Languages. Currently supports Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu & Malayalam on any text area and input box inside the page. Compatible with gmail and Zoho mail (and many more sites).
You will get a small box in the text area, just select the language and start typing. This cool add-on converts the words on fly to your selected language.
I couldn’t get even a single word wrong with this in Hindi. - Blank Canvas Signature: Automatically inserts HTML signatures into your Gmail messages based on which address you are sending from. Supports up to four signatures for each address. Works for Compose Message and Reply/Forward. Read the getting started guide here…
- Integrated Gmail: Allows you to make the Inbox Collapsible and loads your choice of Google Calendar, Reader, Notebook, Groups, Maps, Picasa, Sites, News and Portfolio seamlessly into the Gmail interface below the inbox (rather than the sidebar) using a collapsible box.
- WiseStamp Email Signatures: Easily customize your signature, insert your IM & Social services (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter…etc). Use multiple Business and Private email signatures, inserts HTML to signatures, works with Gmail, Google App’s, Yahoo, Hotmail, and AOL.
- Xoopit: Xoopit for Gmail is a cool add-on for Gmail. Xoopit lets you:
- Search your stuff, not your messages. Xoopit upgrades Gmail search to show you the photos, videos and files that match what you are looking for.
- Browse photos and videos from YouTube, Flickr, Shutterfly, Kodak and Picasa. Links sent to your Gmail account are automatically collected, saving you the hassle of going to these sites.
- Easily find and access your files in Gmail.
- Quick share to friends, Facebook or your blog.
- Get information, contact details and more about the people in Gmail’s conversation view.
Though this extension looks great and makes your life a lot simpler, but at the cost of losing privacy. If you are concered and I am sure you will be, Xoopit uses your Gmail id and password to get the required information and stores that information.
I will not recommend it to you if you have confidential information in your inbox as you never know.
So enjoy these addons and gadgets to make your Gmail experience even better. I am sure you are gonna love it. And yes, tell me your experience, if these add-ons increased your productivity.
Stay tuned…A complete review about some excellent Firefox add-on is in the pipeline.

This is JK, founder of Xoopit. Overall, great post.
We are intently focused on your privacy. Here are some answers to top questions and link to find out more:
1. Can I use the plugin without a Xoopit account?
Yes! You can use Xoopit’s Compose Search and Conversation People features without signing up for the Xoopit service. You will not be able to view, search and send around the photos, files and videos in your mail.
2. When I sign up for Xoopit, why am I asked for my Gmail username and password?
Xoopit requires your Gmail username and password in order to find and index the photos, videos and files in your Gmail. Xoopit works like other mail clients connecting to Gmail, such as your desktop mail program or cell phone.
3. I have more privacy and security questions. Where do I find out more?

@JK:
Thanks for the comment. Actually it might feel ok to give out the password just to use the service. But when I read the terms and conditions, it made me feel a little skeptical.
Frankly speaking, great product, but I leave it to the individuals using it.
@techniqueal:
Thanks a lot my friend. Stay tuned for a very interesting post about 50 Firefox add-ons. It is scheduled to appear on this blog for Tuesday. Check it out, I am sure you will like it.

Will any of these work with Chrome? I use GMail as my e-mail application now. I’ve given up on Outlook. I set it as a application shortcut in Chrome (which I use as my default browser).
@Mike:
Currenly Google Chrome doesn't support extensions and add-ons. And these extensions are created only for Firefox.
Though item # 3 & 6 : Remember the Milk Gmail Gadget and Google Indic Transliteration should work with Chrome as well.
Hope it helps.
Cheers,

I use GTDInbox and it adds even more power to gmail. Here’s the link: http://gtdinbox.com
This morning I just got locked out of my account and GTDInbox may have caused this. Not sure yet. I can’t afford to be locked out though. I’ve used this addon for months and had this happen this once.
hai
Good article! One small issue: Firefox is THE best. It’s just second most used.
Thanks!
