15 Secrets Tips to save Gas while driving
Everyone knows how to drive a vehicle. But very few know how to drive it efficiently to save gas. Below I am writing some quick tips to save gas:
- Don’t open windows when driving on high speed as it increases the air drag which reduces the mileage.
- After filling gas turn the hose upside down to bring out the gas otherwise stuck in the pipe almost about a cup.
- Tighten the gas tank cap to save gas from evaporating and try to park your car in shaded area to save gas from evaporating.
- Don’t run car with old tires. New tires create more friction and so you don’t waste gas accelerating unnecessarily.
- Drive the vehicle on Cruise Control while traveling long distance. Cruise control saves gas and runs the vehicle on low RPM.
- Drive your car on Overdrive (OD). Overdrive saves gas by running the vehicle on low RPM.
- As far as possible stay in a lane or at least don’t change lanes very frequently. Changing lanes increases air resistance and hence consumes more gas.
- Every manufacturer specifies a recommended nominal vehicle speed when it is supposed to be giving the best mileage. Try to drive at that speed.
- Don’t fill up your car with unnecessary weight, the more weight you have, the less mileage your car is gonna give you. You should not even fill your gas tank unless it is apparently empty.
- Switch off all electronics before you start the engine as it will take less power to start.
- Don’t over speed the vehicle unless necessary. Driving over a certain speed consumes too much gas. Refer your vehicle user manual.
- Try not to speed up and apply brake very frequently. There is always an optimum speed you will find out gradually when you can control your vehicle without brakes. (But don’t assume you don’t have to apply brakes at all.) My Mechanical Engineering professor used to say, “Use Engine as brake.“
- Drive your vehicle with proper air pressure. Less pressure creates more drag and hence consumes more gas. At the same time more pressure will wear the tread on the tire quickly. Refer user manual.
- Drive a car which gives you more mileage, e.g Toyota, Honda, Nissan etc. But that might not be feasible for everyone. And not everyone likes these cars.
- Try to drive on freeways so that you don’t waste gas in idling, braking, accelerating and unnecessary stops.
I am sure there are lot many ways you can save gas. Why not you add some of those to the list by adding a comment to the post?
