As you might now, recently Google and Facebook launched Friend Connect services which lets any site/blog owner to add sign-in facility. As a result visitors will be able to connect with others and eventually share stories, comments etc on their Facebook profiles etc.
- As a matter of fact, people will be able to login with their Google, Yahoo, AOL email accounts or they can use OpenIDs if the blog/site owner is using Google Friend Connect. Visitors will be able to invite and share content with their friends on various Social networks including Facebook, Twitter, Mixx etc.
- If the owner is using Facebook Friend Connect, then the visitors will be able to login using their Facebook profile only. And then they will be able to share stories on Facebook and invite friends from Facebook.
Today, Google Connect team announced that they have integrated twitter with Google Friend Connect. What it means,
“This means that when you join a Friend Connected site, you can choose to use your Twitter profile, discover people you follow on Twitter who are also members of the site, and quickly tweet that you have found a cool website.”
Having said that, I want the readers and visitors of Knowliz to spare a minute to checkout the sidebar and look at the Google Friend Connect widget. You may join Knowliz and invite your friends by using any of your online identities including Gmail, Yahoo, AOL and any other online profile (with OpenID). By doing so it will become easier to share the interesting stories online and share and connect with even more friends on Knowliz.
Why I decided to use Google Friend Connect and not Facebook Friend Connect?
Though both services are very promising. Both of them have some pros and cons. But there is one very vast difference which made me use Google Friend Connect. And that difference was…,
“…not everyone uses Facebook. But everyone have at least one Gmail, Yahoo or AOL email id and at the very least they have to use OpenID. Moreover, they will still be able to use their Facebook profile. So I covered the entire world. But if I used Facebook Friend Connect, then I might be restricted to Facebook users only.”
That’s the only reason I said, Google Friend Connect is BETTER than Facebook friend Connect.
Various people will have various opinion about it. So I am up to hear your views, may be I change my mind. But you will have to make me change my mind…Lets see…!!!

Yep, you are absolutely right about the meaningfulness of Friend Connect for Google.
Unlike Facebook connect which people can use to comment on any blog and that comment as well as post appears on their Facebook profile. That in turn gives a boost to both the blog owner as well as the commenter.
Google Friend Connect looks meaningful for the sites/blogs who wants the users to sign-in for protected content or they have some kind of service.
Lets see where Google takes this Connect.
I am planning to enable Facebook connect too for comments.

Yeah, you’re right about the ‘universality’ of Google, and that’s enough reason to choose them over Facebook Connect. But Google will have to learn a lot more on how to effectively connect friends through that javascript box, because once you pass the 30 or 40 bar, it becomes less and less meaningful for everybody. It’s too lame even for a start. Facebook already knows a lot about that and can give Google a hard time on this. Let’s see. Good post.
