First of all if you haven’t, then I suggest you to update to Ubuntu 8.10 “Intrepid Ibex”. Now continuing from my previous post about 20 Things to do after Installing Ubuntu, if you want you can tweak your login window as well.
This is the login window which you see when you first boot Ubuntu and enter your login and password.
There are lots of lots of such themes available on ‘Eyecandy for Gnome Desktop‘ and elsewhere providing endless possibilities to customize Ubuntu and other Linux distros.
How to change the login windows?
- Go to System -> Administration -> Login Window
- In Login window, go to the Local tab, change the settings as shown below.
- Select any theme from the default ones available already.
- Download one of my favourite ones below or whatever you like from the above Gnome-look.org link.
Some of the following are my favourite GDM Themes:
- Avio: A theme with a Nature background.
- Blue Swirl: A minimalist Blue theme for GNOME.
- Doe: A similar theme as Avio but with transparent appearance.
- Intrepid-Ibex: Really a cool Wooden appearance. Comes in three colors – Blue, Yellow and Lime
- Human Vista: For those Vista lovers out there.
- Intrepid-Ibex 3: Similar Avio theme modified for Intrepid background.
- Leaf: A cool leaf with droplets. Comes with a Desktop wallpaper too.
-
New Wave: Same as the previously mentioned Intrepid theme but a lot cleaner and minimalist. Comes in three colors – Blue, Yellow and Lime
- Dark: This one is for Black theme lovers.
-
Wooden: This one is actually the best. I love it. Made it to be my default theme. Really cool and simple.
Or you may download all the above mentioned from http://drop.io/Knowliz/blog – A drop.io Knowliz page.
Below is a small slideshow showing them on a computer screen:
Enjoy… and don’t forget to tell me you GDM login screen details in the comment.
