I have been experimenting various commenting systems for some time. And I tell you, it was a tough decision to choose one of them. IntenseDebate, Disqus and JS-Kit are the most popular options available for the blogging community.
Though every service has its advantages and disadvantages. At the same time, there is no one service which is perfect. Almost all provide you the facility of threaded commenting, replying the comments through email and moderating and flagging spam comments easily.
But finally the deciding factor will the kind of feature you are looking for and the interface user see and experience when you add that commenting service on your blog.
As I said, it was a tough decision to make, but I am happy to mention that I finally made a choice of enabling DISQUS on Knowliz. For me, the only deciding factor was – with DISQUS I can enable Facebook Connect as well. So I don’t have to worry about another customization to add Facebook connect.
Step involved to enable Facebook Connect using DISQUS for Blogger Blogs:
- Register at DISQUS.
- Add your website/blog details.
- Take a backup of your current blog template and save it for later use, in case you wanna roll back.
- Follow the online prompts on DISQUS and then save your Blogger template. (You just enabled DISQUS on your Blogger blog)
Now to enable Facebook Connect the steps are as follows:
- Login to Facebook and ‘Create an App for your blog‘ to get an API and Secret Key. See below:
- Remember to use http://disqus.com as the Callback URL while creating Facebook Application page.
- Once you get the API and Secret Key, come back to DISQUS and enter those details under tools.
- Check the box before Facebook Connect.
- Save the setting on DISQUS.
- Now when you refresh on your blog, you should see Facebook Connect as an option.
- Once everything is all set, you should see the commenting system as shown below:
With this easy to use service I was able to enable Facebook Connect on my Blogger Blog.
If you wanna try other services like JS-Kit and IntenseDebate, please follow instructions mentioned by my friend on Destiny for JS-Kit. IntenseDebate installation is quite straight forward. So you shouldn’t face any problem. But none of these two provide Facebook integration (as of now). Some other customization tips are available on Technical Thought of You for JS-Kit. You can even see JS-Kit enabled blogger blog on Technical Thought of You.
Some changes I would love to see in DISQUS:
- User interface on DISQUS website is not at all user friendly. Simple things are tough, like removing a website/blog from the use profile etc.
- More customization options and integration with other services like twitter, linkedin etc.
- Option to opt for follow-up comments by email notification.
- Option to highlight Blog Author comments to segragate them, may be with a different background or something, not just a star. Or at least a way to select any of those settings.
- Support for OpenID, please.
For other readers who are not bloggers, I am happy to mention that now you have even more ways to leave comment on Knowliz. And that is basically using your Facebook profile. You have to just select ‘Facebook Connect’ and hit the button to authorize Knowliz to access your profile. That authorization will in fact use your Facebook profile information to recognize you and nothing else.
Try it yourself and let me know if you face any issue. Hope you like this integration of DISQUS on Knowliz.

i am using facebook connect on my blog and it is wonderful. my blog is really user friendly in that way
Hello,
Nice tutorial!
I wanted to function on my facebook Disqus WordPress Blog today. Think everything works well, but Facebook Connect is down. I have the same problem on my site than yours. When I click Fconnect by Disqus panel, the window pop up.
No pop-ups to connect to FB or anything.
Do you have any suggestions to solve this problem?
Try on your own blog, Disqus disconnect your account and try to connect with Fconnect.

Disqus is wonderful overall but there are a few things that should be changed or improved. If you gather all the suggestions the users have submitted, I’m sue you won’t find too many flaws.

your facebook connect is not working
Thanks Ali,
I just tried it on Ubuntu. It was working. But yes I see problem on
Windows.
Looks like something is not right at DISQUS.
I will raise a request for this.
Thanks for letting me know.

Ali,
I have checked it on all browsers now. Facebook connect is working for me.

Thanks again..
yey! i did it. xD

Hi,Nice tutorial ! I wanted to put the facebook feature with Disqus on my wordpress blog today. Everythink is working fine but the facebook connect is down. I have the same trouble on my site than on yours. When I click on the Fconnect of the disqus pannel, the window is jumping to the top. There is no popup to login to FB or anything.Have you got some tips to fix this ?Try on your own blog, logout from your disqus account and try to log with Fconnect. Thanks in advanceCurtis
You are right. Facebook connect is not working on @DISQUS. May be @giannii can check it out and see if there are any issues.
It looks like there is some issue. When you click on Facebook, the screen moves to the top but there is no pop-up window or anything to enter Facebook details.
Hopefully DISQUS team is aware of the issue, or they can throw some light for us.
Thanks for informing me Curtis.
Maybe it has something related to the javascript used by plugin for google analytics.
I had the same problem occuring with other popup things not opening unless I switched my google analytics extension. If I disabled it, the popup generated by the podpress extension worked well. So maybe it’s a clue…
Try disabling your analytics extension if you have so, and try the disqus fconnect button.
If it works this way, that’s a good track to follow
Cheers
Actually one thing I noticed, that I see this problem only on Windows. When I am using Ubuntu, I could login through Facebook. That is how I am writing this comment too.
I didn’t disable any plugin. As a matter of fact I didn’t use any new plug-in also.
Disqus team is looking into the issue as well. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.
Thanks for providing more information…
so what should we do differently that will cause facebook connect to work?
i read all the comments but i dont see anything that is said to be done differently
help
thnkz in advance
Thanks for the tutorial
I've tried everything possible. All the steps you mentioned on the blog as well as the comments. I still don't see facebook connect on my blog site.
Am giving up on this. I think, I'll just add the URL to my facebook profile page. It's not what I want, but what the heck!

@Ben:
Some days back a commenter above was trying to follow the steps and it worked for her.
So hopefully they work today too.
I am not sure about the Old Blogger though, it might not work, but wouldn’t that give you a reason to move to new Blogger now.
Let me know if it works for you.
Cheers

Hi there!
Just wondering if all fo this works now, since I saw those posts from about a month ago.
Also, wondering if you know how this can implemented using old Blogger (I know, I know, I’m outdated… I just like the functionality of it better.)
Thanks so much!

@The Janitor:
Thanks for your kind words. I am always happy to help Knowliz readers.
Anytime…

@ Everybody: two points really quick –
1) Despite the few new changes, Disqus still works with blogger on creating a facebook connect
2) This guy Knowliz (Anurag) is the truth! He figured out how to make it work in no time even when the Disqus help staff could not so if you’re having any trouble he’s your man.
- The Janitor
@Janitor:
You can access my email through http://scr.im/knowliz
Send me the details, let me check it out.
But I won’t be able to see what you are doing.
Anyway, send me the link.
@ Anurag: Hey I’d like to take you up on your offer. I got it to work finally but now I have a different problem. I reinstalled it to get it to work and now I’m seeing a glitch of multiple fields. Is there anything I can do about this?
What is your email? I’d like to email you the link for the site so you can check it out.
@Janitor:
Would you mind doing a collaboration session so that we can both see what me and you are seeing.
I suggest using Dimdim for that purpose. Its free or you may call me through Skype on ‘abansal_us’.
If you want I can setup a session anytime you want.
Let me know, I would love to help.
I appreciate you taking the time to look into this process. I tried these steps as you mentioned above but still no luck. I don’t think Disqus can do Facebook connect anymore for those of us trying to start out now.
I talked with the Disqus people and they mentioned that Facebook has now moved some things around in their Applications now that may explain the problem.
For example, in the Facebook App there is no longer a field box entitled “Callback URL.” There used to be, but that title doesn’t exist anymore.
In the “Connect” tab you mentioned in step 2 above you have the following options:
Connect URL
Facebook Connect Logo
Account Preview URL
Base Domain
To further complicate matters, in the “Authentication” tab of the App you have the following options:
Post-Authorize Callback URL
Post-Remove Callback URL
So the question is, which one of these things has taken the place of the artist formerly known as “Callback URL” ?
I have tried treating the “Connect URL” in the Connect tab of the App as the “Callback URL” and have put the complete address of my blog there, and likewise followed the directions regarding the base domain in the corresponding base domain box, but still no facebook connect shows up.
Perhaps the Authentication tab plays a roll now?
Again, thanks for looking into it. You’ve already provided more assistance than the Disqus Help Department. Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated although at this point I’m about ready to give up on Disqus altogether.
- The Janitor
@The Janitor,
I just checked at DISQUS and following things I noticed which might help you configure this on your blog:
1. You no longer need to provide the secret key to DISQUS, only thing you need is the API key that you get from Facebook Developer Application page for your application.
2. Callback URL is still the same though, you have to look under Connect tab on the left, not the one you see on Basic info tab.
3. In this URL, you no longer need to write http://disqus.net, instead it will be your website domain e.g. http://www.knowliz.com
4. Base domain will be your domain without http, I guess, so that should be like ‘knowliz.com’.
5. Rest everything remains same. Just copy the API key and enter that in your blog settings under DISQUS and replace your blog template to see the changes.
6. Most probably you will see Disqus comment system in the new post unless you change the option to change current comments as well.
Hope this information helps you. Let me know if you find any issue. I can do a quick online collaboration to walk you through, in case you find any problem understanding this process.
Cheers

4.
@The Janitor:
Let me find out what’s going on and update this post accordingly. Please bear with me for some time.
Thanks
So the question is, how do we get it to work now?
or is DISQUS no longer an option to get facebook connect on to blogger?
@The Janitor:
Apparently the steps have changed a little. Thanks for the heads up.
I realize this wasn't written too long ago but I think perhaps facebook has changed its application format because these steps no longer apply. Specifically:
"2. Remember to use http://disqus.com as the Callback URL while creating Facebook Application page."
There is no longer a field box titled "Callback URL" under the Basic Information section in the facebook application.
In the facebook application, if you select the "Authentication" tab to the left you are given an option to enter a "Post-Authorize Callback URL"…I'm assuming this is the same thing as the "Callback URL"? Maybe?
Any help on this point would be appreciated.
Also there's a problem on the Disqus site with step #3:
"3. Once you get the API and Secret Key, come back to DISQUS and enter those details under tools."
On the Disqus website>Admin>Settings, while there IS a field box that allows you to enter the API key, there is NOT a field box for the secret.
I have followed every other step to the letter except for the two steps mentioned above and cannot get the facebook connect option to appear on my blog.
Any insight on what to do given these 2 changes on Facebook and Disqus?
Thanks in advance.
i admit im not that familiar with FB connect yet it looks pretty kewl. you did a great tutorial here, mate! certainly helpful for disqus users.
how come you’re no longer using JS-kit?
thanks a lot for the mention! ^_^
I am myself using JS-Kit now.
Written a small review myself today.
See you around.
I am myself using JS-Kit for my blog and have written a review about JS-Kit. You can read it here.
I get an error message: Validation failed. Canvas Page URL must be at least 7 characters long. Wtf? Its about shortness of my domain name takto.sk or something else? Help please if you know the answer..
How did you get this information?
As I understand Facebook and Google had some issue over this friend connect thing.
Do you have any pointer to this information?
I will appreciate it.
Thanks
soon blogger comment system will support facebook connect too
That’s true my friend..
Only reason I tried DISQUS was Facebook connect. As soon as IntenseDebate enables that, I might also move to that platform.
Two reasons:
1. ID is now acquired by Automattic, which is using it with WordPress. So eventually most of the people will be using IntenseDebate by default.
2. Other than that, it has got a bigger community than any other service I think. So exposure wise also that would be the wise decision.
Though I am still confused.
I’m going through the same process… I decided to try out IntenseDebate. I went with the javascript method for my custom blog software. It was easy to install and get running taking only a few minutes… Time will tell though…
