Recently Jajah has released a cool feature for iPod touch, turning the device into a fully functioning mobile phone. The new capability, available as a white label solution, enables customers with the ability to make low-cost phone calls and send SMS text messages to any phone in the world from their iPod touch. To use the service, end users only require an iPod touch and a Wi-Fi connection, with no need for a SIM card or contract.
Anyone with the latest version of the iPod touch and a microphone headset (), will immediately be able to make calls and send SMS messages from their device from any Wi-Fi network in the world. Calling costs will be up to 98 percent cheaper than existing rates on mobile networks, and in many cases could be free.
What you need to do?
  1. Connect your iPod touch or iPhone through any available Wi-fi network.
  2. Launch Safari on your device.
  3. You simply point your iPhone’s Safari browser to iphone.jajah.com
  4. Dial the number you want to call through the JAJAH dialpad.
  5. Alternatively you can select the name in your JAJAH contacts and click on the number you want to call.
  6. JAJAH will call your phone, you pick up, and start talking!
  7. You may want to bookmark this dialpad page on Home screen or in your Safari bookmarks for easy access.
I haven’t tried this utility on iPhone yet, but I don’t see any reason why it should not work on iPhone for anyone looking for a cheaper international call.  Though you need to have enough fund in your Jajah account.  Still any call you make using Jajah will be cheaper than any carrier roaming and internation rate.
Jaxtr and Skype are also the players in this market.  But none of them have any iPhone application yet.
Questions:
  • Do you think this service will help you reduce your cost of making international calls?
  • Would you still like to buy iPhone instead of iPod touch?  And use AT&T service for the next 2 years.
