Create FREE iPhone Ringtone from Songs purchased in iTunes – April fool Apple

All right guys, enough paying Apple for the ringtones created through iTunes.  This is ridiculous of Apple to charge people for the ringtones being created from the songs they already bought through iTunes.
Why is it Ridiculous?
  1. First, if someone has already bought a song for say $0.99 then why the hack he/she should be charged for a clip of that song to be used as a ringtone.  No one is downloading anything, no one is showing any expertise from Apple to create that ringtone.  It is the user who is clipping the songs on his choice and using the built in ‘Create Ringtone’ feature to convert it into Ringtone.
  2. Second, if for any reason Apple tends to charge for the Ringtone, then why should it be the same amount he/she paid for the Ringtone created this way.  Generally, if you bought a song for $0.99 from iTunes and convert it into ringtone, then to buy this ringtone you need to pay another $0.99.
Tha’t why I called it RIDICULOUS.
Now moving forward without worrying about Apple too much, let me show you a way where you can create a Ringtone out of any song (including purchased from iTunes).  I have tried it myself and it works really great.  No iPhone hacking, jailbreak required. Just follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. Select a song in iTunes from your Music library.
  2. Listen to the song and note down the start and end time for the clip you want to use as Ringtone.
  3. Right click on the song and select ‘Show in Windows Explorer’.
  4. Create a copy of this song in Windows Explorer.
  5. Change the file name of this song in Windows Explorer to say ‘Song Name – Ringtone’.
  6. Drag and drop this song in your Music library in iTunes.
  7. Right click on this song and select ‘Get Info’.
  8. Here on various tabs you can change Name, Start and stop time.
  9. Change the Start and Stop time you noted in step 3.  Hit OK.
  10. Now again right click and select ‘Create AAC Version’.
  11. That will show you this song with changed time in your music library.  At this time you may want to delete the duplicate file you created before this conversion.
  12. Again, right click and select ‘Show in Windows Explorer’.
  13. Go to Windows Explorer and change the extension of this song from *.m4a to *.m4r.
  14. Accept the warning displayed.
  15. Double click on this file.  iTunes will automatically show you this file under Ringtones.  If you notice, the file you renamed will have been automatically moved to /iTunes/iTunes Music/Ringtones folder.
  16. As a last step just sync your iPhone to see this ringtone on your iPhone.
  17. Enjoy… No need to pay your hard earned money to Apple for a 30-40 sec ringtone.

The steps should remain same for Mac users also, just check the corresponding terms in Mac. You may want to check out this video on you tube – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5snb5ao3nag
