Yesterday I did another Live broadcast on Ustream.tv showing Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope Clean install walk through with a separate Home Partition.  The entire process is shown in the Live recording embedded below.  Have a look and feel free to try on your machine, even if you are running Vista, XP or any other operating system.  The install was done from scratch on a Dual-boot Windows Vista laptop from Dell.

Though I thought of doing a Fresh install keeping my home partition from previous install intact.  But I was not aware that when I change the file system from ext3 to ext4, it will format the partition.  In fact just before the install started, it indeed gave me a warning that it is going to format the partition, but I didn’t pay attention.  Because of which I lost my previous home partition data and all my customization.

Tip:  If you want to keep your Home partition intact without loosing the data, I would suggest not to use ext4 for Home partition instead you can safely use ext3.

One thing I would recommend is to keep the backup of your data anyway, just in case.  Otherwise go ahead and try the Ubuntu 9.04 Clean install.  Feel free to ask any question you might have or if you have any suggestion for other readers of this blog.
