Today is Blog Action Day 2009 and the topic this year is “Climate Change”. I really appreciate the team involved to start such an initiative where over 9500 Bloggers can write about a same topic and in turn create awareness to around 13 million readers in 150 countries about Climate Change.

Keeping “Climate Change” in mind I am going to write about some of the things we as human and the predecessor of our coming generations can possibly do.  What we need to do to make sure our coming generations in 2100 don’t say that they are living in hell because the Millennium generation didn’t do anything to combat Global Warming.

  1. First and foremost, at least accept there is Global Warming and abrupt climatic changes because of our own misdeeds.  Please accept the fact that Global warming is not just a natural cycle but also an outcome of how we use the Planet Earth.
  2. Understand the science.  No matter you are a scientist or not, but at least understand the climate change.  Understand the Physics behind it.
  3. If you have doubt about it, then go read the books, journals and online articles to correct your facts.  For a start I can give you some pointers where you can get the facts about some common Global Warming Myths.

Even if there is Global Warming, there is nothing I can do.
Well, I would say, we are the only ones who have to do something, if not all.  After you have accepted the fact then go find ways to fix it.  The sooner we reduce our impact on the climate, the sooner we can prevent further warming.  Some of the things you can start doing immediately:

  1. First of all, don’t take Nature for granted.  Use the Natural resources cautiously and at least don’t misuse them.
  2. When you produce something, first think about what you are going to do about the waste you are going to create.  Don’t just throw all your waste in rivers and oceans.
  3. Use energy efficient appliances and try to minimize your energy consumption.
  4. Recycle your old electronics properly.  If you don’t know a place then try out services like MyBoneYard, Gazelle or Listia.  These services give you money for your old electronics and recycle them properly.

  5. Make your home and office eco-friendly.  Use the latest hardware which are more energy efficient.
  6. Try to carpool while going to work.  There are many online services which let you find the best carpooling partner.
  7. Reduce your use of papers.  Find out ways to communicate using the technology advancements.  For example, consider Gmail, Yahoo like emails over Snail Mail, IM over phone, Skype like VOIP services over landline phones, Online Web Conferencing like Dimdim and Yuuguu over traveling to attend the meetings.  You got the idea, right.
  8. Add you own action item in this list.
  9. Finally, if you like this write-up, then share it with your friends through email, Twitter, Facebook etc.  Let them also know about climate change and what they can do to combat that change.   This is the whole concept of this Blog Action Day too. Right..
