Lot of my friends ask me, "How do you update your Facebook status all day round?" Many times I will just smile and move on, but today I thought why not let everyone know the secret.
Don’t worry there is no secret in fact except the fact the various applications and services make it possible for me to update Facebook Status virtually. I use these services and applications through various means like Web, Email, Messenger, iPhone Apps and other connected services. Below I am mentioning some of them I use regularly:
- Twitter: Twitter being the most popular micro-blogging service, I have connected all other services I use with it. Twitter in turn updates my Facebook status. So whenever I do something on these connected services, my Facebook status is updated automatically. For example : published a post on Knowliz (using Twitterfeed), Shared news items (explained later), commented on one of my blog post etc etc.
- Su.pr: Su.pr is more than a URL shortening service from StumbleUpon which I use to push my blog posts to Twitter and Facebook. Whenever I publish a new post on Guturgu, it gets pushed to Facebook through Su.pr.
- Posterous: Posterous as I explained earlier is an amazing easy blogging platform where I have migrated my other blog Guturgu from Blogger. With Posterous I can simply update all my linked social networks at the same time. But I choose to publish my selective blog posts to Facebook.
- Aardvark: When I answer anybody’s question on Aardvark, it updates my Twitter status and in turn Facebook. To answer question I very rarely use the web interface. The question are sent to me either via IM, email or as a push notification to my iPhone. If I answer the question, it updates my Facebook status. Read our detailed review of Aardvark.
- Digg: Whenever I like or Digg any article I like, it appears on my Facebook status update. Digg is a place for people to discover and share content from anywhere on the web. The content is shared and voted on by Digg users.
- Facebook for iPhone (Facebook Mobile): While on the go, I use Facebook iPhone app to upload photos and to update my Facebook status if needed. Generally they are random musings like restaurant details, movie updates and all.
- Google Reader: Google Reader is my favorite RSS reader. This is where I read over 200 blogs and keep track of another 100. Whenever I like something and see fit for my Facebook audience I share them through Google Reader.
- Tumblr: When I update, like or reblog something on Tumblr (similar to Posterous) it updates my Facebook status.
- Friendfeed: Friendfeed is another service collaborator which brings all my social networks in one place. Whatever I do on the web reflects on my Friendfeed status which in turn updates Twitter or Facebook depending on my settings.
- Brightkite: When I go to any restaurant, movie or something similar where I want to update my position to my Facebook friends, I use Brightkite.
- AudioBoo or iPadio: When I publish any audioblog or phlog (iPadio) using my iPhone or regular landline phone, it gets pushed to Facebook.
- DISQUS: When I comment or reply to any comment on my blog posts using email or web, it updates my Facebook status.
- Youtube: When I like, subscribe or upload something to Youtube, it appears as Facebook status update.
- Howcast: Like or share any How-to video from my iPhone on Howcast, it updates Facebook.
- Qik: When I capture any video from my iPhone 3G using Qik, it updates my live status on Twitter and Facebook. And if I share something that also reflects on Facebook. Qik in turn uploads the captured video to Youtube, so that also an additional entry. You may want to learn how to capture video with iPhone 3G.
- Livestream: Similar to Qik, when I create any screencast using Livestream, it updates Facebook.
- NetworkBlogs: Share something using Facebook App for Blogs.
- Flixster: Movie reviews etc. using Flixster iPhone app update my Facebook status.
- Texas Holdem Poker: This one is fun because whenever I am free, I like to play Poker on my iPhone using Zyga Live Poker app. When I win some good hands, it lets me update my Facebook friends. BTW, this is only Facebook game I play.
- Last.fm: When I like some music online or in Songbird, my favorite music player on Ubuntu, I update my Facebook status because Last.fm is linked to Facebook.
- NYTimes iPhone App: Best News app for iPhone – The NewYork Times, now lets me share news on Facebook and Twitter easily. So when there is something interesting or noteworthy, I share it on Facebook.
- USA Today iPhone App: Similar to NYTimes App, USA today is also one of my favorite iPhone app for news.
- Knowliz Facebook Fan Page: How can I forget Knowliz Facebook Fan page from where I post updates to my fans and in my status update. I can use my blog Wibiya toolbar to also share stuff from Knowliz on various services.
- Flickr: Similar to other services when I share any photo on Flickr it appears in my Facebook status as well.
- Delicious: When I bookmark some article, news or website using Delicious, it updates my Facebook status.
- Other websites using Facebook Connect: You might have seen how Facebook Connect lets you use your Facebook profile to interact with various websites including Knowliz. So I link any website that allows Facebook connect. When I comment or share anything from these service they update my Facebook status.
In fact, I very rarely login to Facebook, instead I am virtually logged in while using these apps and services. Yes, it has taken a lot of effort to synchronize these services in such a way that the updates don’t appear multiple times.
Now a day every website has started allowing Facebook and Twitter status updates automatically. So sometimes multiple similar entries appear in my Facebook status. However I keep refining my synchronization process to keep the noise to minimum.
Twitter and Facebook are two social networks around which my entire online activity revolves. Without actually being at Facebook and Twitter I am virtually updating my Facebook and Twitter statuses. You may want to read a list of 100+ Free iPhone apps I use and recommend.
Please let me know in comments if you have any suggestion for me to even improve on the status update noise to minimum. I would love to hear how you update your Facebook and twitter status.

This is a great article, especially when work places block access to Facebook or other social networks. At one point, I had to send an email to Twitter, and then hash code my Twitter post just to update my Facebook status since both Twitter and Facebook were blocked.
Here's how I stumbled upon this – I'm looking to put a tool on my website that people can choose to click on that will automatically post something pre-defined as their facebook status update. I must be googling the wrong terminology but if you happen to know of anything you seem pretty in touch from your articel above!
Cheers,
Simon
Simon,
You can use Ping.fm or Pixelpipe, Friendfeed etc.
They can automatically post on your Facebook after you link the two.
Let me know if that helps.
Wow, I knew of some of these techniques like using twitter, the youtube link and a couple others, but you definetly have the complete list. I will try some of those as I use some services too
