During my recent migration from Blogger to WordPress, I came to know that there are tons of previous posts that are obsolete.
Either the products I wrote about are no longer in service, the deals have expired or the news itself is too old to matter.
Even in some cases I found that the news source itself has abandoned the page and the news can’t be found. Some of these sources were CNN and Financial Times etc.
So do you think we should also delete obsolete posts from our blogs and keep it neat and tidy so that the reader always finds valuable content. You may participate in this quick poll:
Reasons why you won’t want to do that because:
- of the hassle of going through old posts and checking each and every link.
- its a time waster activity.
- I don’t think it matters at all.
- deleting old posts might create another slue of activities like updating broken links etc. etc…
I would like to start a discussion to find out what is the best practice in Blogosphere. Not sure if Darren Rowse from Problogger will be able to throw some light on this post. If he could, that would be great to know from a Blogging Mastermind what is in fact a Best Practice.
In my opinion, if the entire post is about a news, service or a shopping deal which is no longer valid, it should be OK to delete. You may also get away by updating the post by adding a comment on the top, saying that it is no longer in service or something like that.
What do you say? Should obsolete posts be deleted or not? Let us know your views in the comments.

Hello Anurag,
It is nice to see your blog on WordPress. I think you should make a decision whether you want to import old post or not. Recently Antonio Lupetti did the same thing migrating from Blogger to WP. Check his blog http://woorkup.com/2009/10/03/woork-is-up/ and ask for his opinion.

Thanks Santosh,
I will have a look. But I have already imported all my posts from Blogger to WordPress. Since there is a 301 redirect, so I should not be getting into Duplicate Content penalty.
Though I have to fix some of the broken links and I should be all set.
Let me know if you have any other suggestion.
Cheers..
If you decide to go the deleting route, you should look into a WordPress plugin like Broken Link Checker. It indexes all your links and will alert you if you have a broken link and allow you to fix it.
Yes, it is so true. I used the Broken Link checker only, that’s how I came to know.
I was able to fix lots of broken link too. I think this plug-in is a must for any WordPress user.
Thanks for your suggestion though.
Cheers..
