Windows 7 vs. Ubuntu 9.10 : Which is the best?

We all know that recently two major releases happened – Microsoft Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux 9.10 (Karmic Koala).  To find out which is the best and what people are planning to use, we ran a small poll on Knowliz sidebar.  We started this poll on 29th October, 2009 right after both OS came out as final release to public.

Surprisingly a major portion of Knowliz visitors voted for Ubuntu 9.10 (52%) whereas only 15% voted in favour of Windows 7.  Also if you consider the people voting for dual boot between Ubuntu and Windows 7 (33%) and split that amount equally then the actual percentage of people using Windows 7 vs Ubuntu 9.10 will look like this: (Windows 7 – 32% & Ubuntu 9.10 – 68%)

Windows 7 vs. Ubuntu 9.10 Poll

So as you know the majority of visitors on Knowliz use Windows as captured by Google Analytics and only a fraction use Linux OS.  Therefore you can safely assume that this poll is not biased at all.  Here is a screenshot for Knowliz visitor stats from Google Analytics:

Here is the poll for your quick consideration: (the poll is now closed)

Only thing it tells that the mindset of people is changing and they are migrating to cost effective alternatives of proprietary software and OS.  Earlier version of Windows – Windows Vista notoriety is also culprit of this decline in the loyalty for Microsoft products.  Obviously the open source community software are getting better and better with every release.

You may want to find out 25 reasons to try Ubuntu instead of Windows as well if you are still thinking why you should also migrate to Ubuntu.

What do you think about this analysis and the results of this poll.  Do you agree?  If not, what are your comments?  If yes, then tell us in comments which Linux distro you are using and why?  I will love to hear your views.

  • I am a big fan of Linux, and especially Ubuntu, but since 8.04 there has been a serious issue with getting wireless to work correctly. If this has finally been fixed with Karmic Koala then I would say Windows 7 has some serious competiton.
  • I have been using Ubuntu since 7.04 but I never had any issue with wireless or bluetooth. It recognises it better than Windows.
But as always, hardware compatibility may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some hardware are still supporting Windows only. So I will say it is not Ubuntu's issue not recognises WiFi rather a hardware issue.
Check out Karmic, it is really awesome. As you said Windows 7 has real competition going forward.
    Thanks
