@Santosh & Anurag:
For new people like me in US, starting with a smart phone plan might be a costly affair. But looking at the future prospect, I'll be studying and working for some time, which means any plan which can cover my initial set up cost as well as give me a small smart device, like i-phone, will be of extreme help.
The navigation thing with other powerful apps, make these mobile devices of extreme help to new students like me.

That's right. But if you look from a cost perspective in US, maintaining a cellphone has always been a costly affair. Consider a $49.99 plan with T-Mobile which will still cost you ~$1200 in 2 Years contract with a free phone. So it's just that we don't realize it.
Now for another $800 if you are getting a blazing fast UNLOCKED phone with UNLIMITED everything and you obviously don't need to invest in Netbook - I will go for it.
Because at the end of the day with smartphone I am always connected, have GPS (saved at least ~$100) with turn by turn directions, camera 5MP with ability to capture video etc etc...and finally after 2 years you can anyway sell it on ebay if you want.
In fact you may not think of its need, many people who have never used a smartphone don't know the benefit of owning one. But with my personal experience I can say, once you use any smartphone, you can't live without one.
What do you think?

Hello Anurag,

I was talking from point of view of costs of ownership from the ordinary users point of view who generally talk and text on the phone.

Have a powerful devices like Google Nexus has its advantages but costs of $2,099 is too steep unless the user gets the benefit out of it economically. Owning smart phones just because I want rather than I need will be a cost idea for ownership.

Regards,

Santosh Puthran

I won't agree with you on that thought Santosh.
The smartphones are there to reduce the need of carrying two or more devices. iPhone and other smartphones have somewhat made it unnecessary to carry laptops on many business travels as well. You would know how much you can do with a smartphone - email, live meetings, streaming, recording, remote access to your computers home and so on and so forth...
Netbooks are just an extension of these smartphones with a little bigger screen but you can't carry them every time everywhere with you unless you know you are going on a business trip.
Whereas you can/will carry a smartphone always with you and if you happen to acquaint with a business prospect, you have access to everything you need for that immediate business need.
So in my opinion, smartphone and netbooks are entirely two different thing and have different purpose. Google Nexus one is in fact a device more powerful than some of the notebooks 2-3 years back.
Hope you would agree...

I think it would be economical to buy cheap phone and a Netbook with a mobile broadband connection instead of buying these smart phones.

Let's wait for Chrome laptops to come...
