Seriously…What else can you expect for FREE?  If you didn’t have enough reasons to buy an iPhone earlier, then the latest update on FREE Mapquest app should give you another reason to think over.  Your iPhone would provide you FREE GPS too with Mapquest app.

Now lets talk about this app.  Mapquest used to have two apps in Apple Store – one FREE and one with Voice Guided directions for $0.99.  With this latest update, you don’t have to spend that $0.99 also because the FREE app itself gives you that option now.  The app advances automatically as you drive and on the way gives you guidance at decent intervals.

Earlier we had only one other app which could have done that for FREE and that was Waze (iTunes Link).  Unfortunately, I didn’t find Waze to be very reliable (Review pending) but Mapquest obviously gives that reliability because they have been providing mapping services for over a decade.  If you still want to know more about Mapquest app (iTunes Link), then some of the other features are mentioned below:

  1. Provides you walking directions too. (Pedestrian mode)
  2. Three energy saving modes allow you to set the power consumption level to save battery power.
  3. Save Maps & routes on Mapquest.com using your AOL id and retrieve them on iPhone.
  4. Easily search for businesses by entering the address directly. (Something which is very useful while on the Go.  This is missing in Navigon iPhone App)
  5. Search for business or place, locate yourself with built-in iPhone GPS and calculate the route.  Start driving without ever touching the iPhone again.
  6. You can also create a trip by adding multiple destinations to your route.  Something which most of the GPS app don’t provide.
  7. NOTE:  The map is always pointing North, so it doesn’t rotate the map as you drive along.  (Thought you would like to note that.)
  8. You would need a DATA plan to make this app work perfectly.  Something all my jailbroken iPhone friends would like to notice.

Hope that gives you everything you ever wanted in a GPS.  Isn’t it?  I wouldn’t say that Mapquest is a complete GPS solution in any manner, but it is pretty close for the price (free).  Waze is a full-fledged GPS app, but it has a long way to go before becoming a complete solution too.  The choice is yours.  I would suggest try both and see which one works better for you.

Let me know if you use any other app which provides all this for FREE or with insignificant amount.  And if you have been using this app, then let us know what you like most about this.  Don’t forget to share…
