If you are among those who swear by Google Calendar in their life like myself, you will be happy to learn about this quick tip.  Now you can add events to Google Calendar using SMS from your phone.  You can simply compose a SMS in plain English and send it to GVENT (48368).  Google Calendar will create a new appointment with all necessary details based on the SMS you sent.

But as you can very well understand, before you can use this facility, you will have to configure Google calendar to work with your phone.  Follow the below mentioned steps to set it up:  (Remember, standard SMS rates apply to send/receive SMS from your phone.)

  1. Go to your Google Calendar and click “Settings”.
  2. Click on “Mobile Setup” tab on the top.
  3. Enter your phone number and click “Send Verification Code”.
  4. Wait a little bit to receive SMS on your phone with a confirmation code.
  5. Enter this verification code online to complete setup.
  6. Click “Finish Setup”.
  7. You can now start adding appointments to your Google Calendar using SMS from your phone.
  8. Try with something like, “Check Google Calendar SMS service today at 2:00pm.” and see what happens.

Some issues I noticed while using this service:

  • This SMS service doesn’t work with Google Voice.  Because Google Voice doesn’t allow sending SMS to short codes, GVENT (48368) in this case.  For the same reason, you can’t use this service with other FREE SMS apps like Textplus+, Textfree and Textie on your iPhone and Android phone.
  • If you setup multiple Gmail accounts with the same phone number, events will be created only in the calendar setup in the last.  Other than that if you have an unlimited text plan on your phone, it is a pretty cool idea to add events to your Google Calendar.

Check it out and let us know how you liked it.
