For the last couple of days I have been struggling to install Boxee on my Ubuntu 10.10 machine.  You would think, what is so special about this install.  Well, try yourself… When you try to install Boxee on Ubuntu 10.10, you get the following error:

“Dependency is not satisfiable: libdirectfb-1.0-0|libdirectfb-1.2-0″

Which means that there is a package dependency which is not satisfied in Ubuntu 10.10.  People on Ubuntu 10.04 and earlier can install Boxee without any issues.  So how do you install Boxee on Ubuntu 10.10.  Don’t worry, I have found a quick solution for this problem:

  1. Download latest Boxee installation *.deb file from Boxee.tv.
  2. Download the package dependency separately for Lucid which is file : libdirectfb-1.2-0.deb.  Select the appropriate file for AMD and Intel processors.
  3. Run libdirectfb-1.2-0.deb to install on Ubuntu 10.10 which will eventually install the necessary dependency.
  4. Run the latest Boxee installation file boxee-0.9.22.13692.XXX.deb to install Boxee.
  5. Voila….!!! no issues.  Right.  Boxee installs just fine on Ubuntu 10.10.

There is nothing which is modified on your Ubuntu installation except the fact that now it can also run Boxee which was not possible earlier.  This is because Ubuntu 10.10 comes with libdirectfb-1.2-9 instead of 1.2-0 which Boxee requires to run.  By this method we just made that file available to Boxee, that’s it.  So far my Boxee installation is working really smooth.

Let us know if you ran into any issues with it. And if you have any other ideas.  What apps are your favorite on Boxee?
